Allmusic Review by Scott Yanow:
The veteran vibraphonist Lionel Hampton (then 79) leads his young big band through recent originals; only Joe Henderson's "Inner Urge" and the Gene Ammons/Sonny Stitt line "Blues Up & Down" were more than a few years old at the time and, to his credit, Hampton avoids his usual repertoire. The music is often funky and played with spirit although the orchestra occasionally sounds like a somewhat anonymous stage band that had not fully developed its own individual personality yet. Jerry Weldon and Doug Miller have a good tenor battle on "Blues Up & Down," altoist Rob Middleton and his brother Andy (on soprano) are in fine form on "Two Brothers" and Hampton has little difficulty finding fresh statements to make on this modern material.
